There was a reason why WOMEN were at the Olympics previous to the banishment of figures. THEY WERE HARD! Most good skaters could pass 1 figures test maybe 2 a year. Not like the sloppy moves tests that kids whip through passing 3 or 4 a year!!!
ADD to this the new "Skate By Numbers" (yes we are referring to PAINT BY NUMBERS you get the point!) and you have skating that is less mature, less artistic, and LESS than it used to be. Pull up youtube footage of the Olympics in its glory days and you see the fluidity of movement, the speed, the emotion, THE SKATING that was LOST!!!!!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-598357895737427353.post-9142562410865680572010-02-25T12:00:07.143-06:002010-02-25T12:00:07.143-06:00Hi, jumpingbeanmom.

I have two things to say to that: first, if you don't think skating is sport, then gymnastics, boxing, diving, freestyle skiing, even ski jumping which has a form component as well as distance should not be sports either. Basically, a sport is anything that is physical activity with rules that can be done competitively. I'd say figure skating most definitely applies. :)Andreahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08122291897024145559noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-598357895737427353.post-38983335638086116822010-02-12T14:03:15.421-06:002010-02-12T14:03:15.421-06:00I hear this quite a bit, but it doesn't make m...I hear this quite a bit, but it doesn't make me angry anymore, because I tell them these two things:

1) Go try it. Let's see how long you last. Some people try to say that it's still not a sport, but they sure get off in a hurry. Then I describe my training to them in detail: all of the hours on the ice, training at the gym, all of that time spent streching. I'll add in falls, bruises, and scars obtained through figure skating for good measure. They usually shut up after that, whether they admit they're wrong or not.

2) Go look up "figure skating" or "ice skating" in sports charts: those that show calories burned, etc. Usually just a simple calorie count will do. To burn more calories than a figure skater, you have to run at least six miles an hour, and you would still barely beat the skater. And he or she would skate longer than you.

Bottom line: Figure skating is a sport, and no one who has actually done it, actually looked at the facts, really believes that. People try saying that it isn't in order to make themselves feel better, like it makes them cool or macho or something.Rosalienoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-598357895737427353.post-88238278499596388692010-02-12T11:33:55.837-06:002010-02-12T11:33:55.837-06:00Hooooo!
